Q: Compaq EVO?
I just bought a refurbished Compaq EVO that has 512MB and 60GB. What standard features are there on this laptop and do you think its a good buy?? I got it for US$770.

A: It sounds like it was a good buy. I got a laptop that had been returned from the store with a 80 gig hd, and 512MB RAM. It also has a 64 bit AMD processor, it is realy fast and I got it all for less than 1000, and that was without rebates. So it sounds like for your price range it was a good buy.

Q: Can a Compaq Evo N1015v support hard drives larger than 80GB?
I have a Compaq Evo N1015v and the largest hard drive offered with it was 80GB. I've seen sites saying that they have 120-160GB hard drives that are compatible. I've bought RAM that was supposed to be guaranteed compatible, that wasn't, so I am sceptical. Does anyone have a N1015v with a hard drive over 80GB?

A: first make sure what kind of harddisk u currently have, and get a similar one, it is that simple. harddisks are known from each other by their connection, and theire are 3 types: - IDE - SATA 1.5 - SATA 3.0 make sure the one u currently have is which one, and get one of its type

A: It could be loose connections, check them.. Check if the mic is working Ok on a different computer, also have you installed anything new? If you haven't try system restore. that should fix your problem.

Q: Where is a graphics card located in a Compaq Evo N800c?
I have a Compaq Evo N800c and I think I have some sort of problem with the graphics card. And I need to know where the Grahpics Card is located, so I can see if its not placed in properly, broke, or etc..

A: The graphics card is not always going to be a large chip, to start off the graphics card is a small chip integrated in the motherboard by factory. some can be 1x1 while others 4x5 You can look for it but is not recommended, either the company has hidden the card so that you don't mess with it or its small. If you want to continue your search you can look for the card's manufacturer name printed in the top of the card.

Q: Does anyone know who makes the bios for compaq Evo N800c?
I'm trying to find out who makes the bios for compaq Evo N800c (Award,AMI,Phoniex,Other)the bios on the laptop I bought is locked and I have a couple of backdoor passwords if I can figure out the bios.

A: I'm trying to find the exact maker and version right now. In the meantime are you interested in clearing the password set right now, by clearing the CMOS? It would mean you need to remove what they,(Compaq), call the Disk Cell RTC battery, (CMOS battery to me! lol!) Here's a link to the PDF Service and Maintenance Manual on HP/Support. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?contentType=SupportManual&lang=en&cc=us&docIndexId=64179&taskId=101&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=316692 Look under Service and Maintenance Information heading, Maintenance and Service Guide-9 Aug 2007-PDF-14.22,(MB's) Took me about 20 seconds or so to download this Pdf. (Hate it when my computer sits there and clicks slowly, and nothings showin in my taskbar. PDF's, sheeesh, ya' gotta' love 'em!) In the PDF click on the + sign next to Product Description, then 1.3 Clearing a Password) Just in case the backdoor password thing doesn't work! EDIT: Okay. It's a Phoenix BIOS ver F.14

Q: How do you replace the Hard drive IDE controller on a Compaq EVO N1020V?
Hi Everyone, I have a Compaq EVO N1020V, that (when booted from a boot CD) is perfectly fine. However, the ability to power, and recognize any 2.5" hard drive is ruined. When I manually "lift" the hard drive inside its chasis (when connected), the hard drive sort of spins up, but it never enters a ready state. Even if I hold it there, it's not recognizable by the BIOS. When I attach a hard drive but don't "lift" the hard drive just a little, the system hangs before it posts. I'm assuming this is because it can tell that there is something there, but the rest of the check during boot fails. So, I'm thinking some kind of cyclic error. The only way to exit the hang is to power off the system. I don't want to have to replace the entire motherboard if possible. I bought this because a person told me it just had a bad hard drive, and I'm a broke college student as it is. (No, they won't take it back!) I do have the service manual for this model, but its not this detailed.. :-( For what it's worth, the hard drive that I'm testing with is brand new. It can't be the hard drive, it works in my other laptop.

A: maybe its just the messed up hard drive. you prolly will have to replace it yourself. if so , you could wait and look for a couple of weeks in the sunday newspaper for deals on hard drives. and if you want to replace it your self, its really easy. you just have to unscrew the hdd, and take out the data connector, and then vise versa on the new hdd. its easy. but if it isnt the hdd, its probably the motherboard. if you need to buy another motherboard, you could look on newegg.com and they have some really nice deals on motherboards. i personally bought a 50 dollar one, and it runs awesome. email me if you need anymore help.

Q: How do i enable the built in wireless on a Compaq Evo n600c?
I discovered that the lid of my laptop houses a wireless card/ adapter, but I have no idea how to get it running. If anyone could help me figure it out, I would appreciate it.

A: Look for a hard switch on the sides of the laptop. Alternatively, it could be a keypress ... on the function keys (F1 to F12), look for symbols, usually in blue. The symbol for wireless usually is a laptop or an antenna with some "waves". To toggle the functions in blue, you will need to hit the "Fn" key located usually on the lower left.

Q: Anyone know how to activate the 4 easy access buttons on the Compaq Evo N620c?

Q: How do I remove a cd-rom drive from a Compaq Evo N610c and replace with a dvd drive?
I cannot take this cd rom out of my computer. Then I want to insert a dvd drive in its place. I don't know how to pull it out safely, even when I get the message "SAFE TO REMOVE HARDWARE."

A: Don't waste your time or your money ... simplest cheapest option is to buy an external dvd burner

Q: Can a Compaq Evo T20 be scrapped for anything?
I'd hate to see it go to waste. Can I extract the USB ports, anything? If not, where should it be recycled?

A: It seems that your particular model of computer (tower only) sells for around $20 on eBay plus shipping. I'm not sure if it's worth your time/effort for that much. There is up to 256MB of memory that can be installed in your computer, if so, I would attempt to sell this before recycling your computer. Seeing as it's simply somewhat of a terminal/client with no HD and has to be attached to a server in order to operate there is little value in recycling this. If anything I would donate it to some place like good will only to get the tax break of the $20-40 - they would probably in turn pitch it. Hope this helps!

Q: Is a SAMSUNG M368L3223FTN memory DIMM compatible with a HP Compaq EVO D530 Series All Form Factor Computer?
I'm trying to add memory into my computer and I was wondering if SAMSUNG M368L3223FTN memory DIMMs are compatible with my computer, a HP Compaq D530. I meant Small Form Factor, not All Form Factor. Sorry.

A: See this: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11632_div/11632_div.HTML According to the above, your computer takes PC 2700 and PC 3200 DDR memory, and this memory module is 400 Mhz or the same thing as PC 3200...so yes, theoretically, it should work. I do caution you! Sometimes, memory sticks, from different manuacturers when mixed together, but of the same kind of memory sometimes have conflicts. It has to do with timing, CAS latencies and other issues. So I says YES it should work, with this caveat in mind.

Q: What exact internal hard drive do I need for my Compaq EVO D500 SFF?
1. I have a Compaq EVO D500 SFF. There's only room for one internal hard drive so please don't tell me just buy another one and place in a free slot. 2. The computer is a Pentium 4 using a 60GB hard drive with 1GB of RAM. The computer is using Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 as its operating system. A. How large of an internal hard drive can I install onto this computer in terms of GBs??? 100GB? 120GB? 200GB? B. How does one know which type of hard drive to get? Is there somewhere on the computer that tells me to get IDE, SATA, ATA ???? is there a program on Windows 2000 that lets you know this pertinent information? C. Are there any recommendable, legit websites offering free info on hard drives and FAQs? a site that will tell me exactly what type of hard drive goes with a certain model of computer no matter it's age? This computer is not a laptop. It is a desktop in the truest sense. It's designed to sit on a literal desk and not take up too much space. It also allows you to place the monitor on top of it. It's sometimes called a pizza box PC because of it's shape. Also, I'm not taking any computer to a major retailer or mom and pop store, when I'm fully capable of doing the repairs and upgrades myself. My computer works fine. I don't need the cheap lazy answer of ....... Hey, why not just get a new computer!!! People with too much money to burn or people with bad credit history think along those lines.

A: You can use an ATA100 connection hard drive with your computer. (You will also see these advertised as PATA or EIDE.) Since the 80's, this was the standard hard drive for all consumer based computers. SATA is a relatively recent development, only a few years old in the consumer market. Thus there was no need back then to determine what type of connection you needed for your hard drive. There is not a program on Windows 2000 to give you this info. I believe that the upper limit for the hard drive is 650gb. The service packs may have increased that limit. I would go for at least a 320gb, which you can now pick up for under $100. Also, there is no limit on the speed and cache of your hard drive. I would recommend at least a 7200rpm and 16gb cache. I have included the link to the Newegg website for hard drives of this style. Since you appear to have a small form factor case, (from what I infer from your description) pay attention to the reviews and what they say about the heat put off by the hard drives. Your case may not have much in the way of cooling. I have listed a web site that gives you a little bit of information on your computer. I hope that it helps. I think that I covered all of your questions, but not quite in the right order. Good luck with installing your new hard drive!
